What are the different sizes of futon beds?

Futons are versatile Japanese mattresses that have become popular worldwide for their functionality and adaptability. Traditionally made with layers of cotton, wool, or synthetic materials, futons are designed to be easily folded and stored away during the day, making them ideal for small living spaces. Originally crafted from cotton or wool, its main aim is to provide the ultimate comfort for a good night's sleep. They are versatile products and can be used on various bases to meet your needs. However, with the wide variety available today, it is important to know what the different sizes of futon beds are.
What size is a double futon bed mattress?

The sizes of futon mattresses are similar to those of a traditional bed mattress. That means a double futon bed is the same size as a standard double mattress. The dimensions are the same and can also be made in custom sizes. Check out the different types of futon beds and their dimensions below.

Single futon

This is the smallest size available. Typically measuring around 76cm x 193cm (30’’ x 75’’), this type of futon mattress is perfect for weekend getaways, camping trips and sleepovers. They are ideal for average-sized adults with smaller flats. The single futon is perfect as a bed and is ideal for transitioning from a crib to a bed, offering a comfortable fit for a child's bed frame or a single adult. It also serves as a snug sitting area for reading or play.

Compact Double futon
The Compact double futon size is the smallest double mattress. It is 122cm wide x 193cm long (48” x 75”).   (.  These mattresses are perfect for smaller spaces but can also accommodate two adults for occasional sleeping.   A compact double futon is an excellent choice for a sofa bed for a smaller room where space is limited.

Double futon/Standard Double futon
This is the most common size for futon sofa beds. Measuring 137cm wide x 193cm in length (54’’ x 75’’), the futon mattress accomplishes the needs of those who like more space while sleeping. The Standard double size provides the most suitable balance between cost and convenience and is ideal for two people. When choosing a futon for small spaces like a studio or guest room, consider a tri-fold design which takes less floor space than a 2-seater sofa. A bi-fold double futon gives 3 seating spaces and converts easily to a full double-size bed.

King futon
Last but by no means least, we have the king-size futon. This is the largest futon mattress size and is super comfortable and spacious for a couple or even a family!  The king-size futon mattress measures 152cm wide x 193cm in length (60” x 75”).

What are the benefits of futon sofa beds?
Solutions for small homes
If you live in a flat or a small house, you know the struggle of making every inch count. Futon beds come to the rescue. They fold up easily, transforming from a bed into a sofa. It's like having two pieces of furniture in one!  When you’re not using the bed, you can create more space to move around. It’s like turning your living room into an open canvas, giving you the freedom to design your space as you wish.

Versatility and comfort
When it comes to comfort, futons have come a long way. Modern futon sofa beds often feature thicker mattresses filled with foam or cotton, ensuring you get a cosy night’s sleep. Plus, they’re adjustable; on some models, you can sit up to read a book or lie flat when it’s time to snooze. It’s as if you have a cloud that can transform to fit your mood!

Budget-friendly
Futon sofa beds are usually more affordable than traditional mattresses and frames. If you’re on a budget or just looking to save, a futon can be a smart investment. You can score a stylish, functional piece of furniture without breaking the bank. Think of it as the smart shopping secret you didn’t know you needed.

Ideal for guests
When friends or family come to stay, a futon sofa bed is your best friend. It easily converts into a bed, providing a comfy spot for your guests to crash. And when they go home, you can convert it back into a sofa, keeping your living space welcoming and tidy. It’s like having an instant guest room right in your lounge!

Easy to maintain
Cleaning can often be a hassle, but futon beds are simple to care for. Detachable futon covers can be removed from the futon and are machine washable. This feature keeps your sofa bed looking fresh, so you won’t have to worry about spills or stains. Imagine a bed that’s not just comfy but also easy to keep clean!

What are the different types of futons?

Bi-fold frame
Bi-fold futons are a popular type of frame. These futon frames fold in half lengthwise down the middle to create a standard sofa with space for 3 people to sit.  They're ideal if you want a regular couch during the day and a bed at night without the hassle of pulling out and setting up a hide-a-bed.Bi-fold sofa bed futons are usually available in the standard double futon size, and you can choose a mattress in the thickness that suits your needs and preference.

Tri-fold frame
Tri-fold futons fold their mattresses into three sections to form a sofa or chair. They're a great option for those who have limited room space, as a tri-fold futon frame takes up less floor space than a sofa. The mattress folds into thirds with this frame style, so thinner mattresses work best.

Roll-up beds
Crafted with high-quality materials and a choice of filling options, these futons provide exceptional comfort and support whether fully unfurled or rolled up. The innovative zip closure allows you to quickly and easily transform the futon, rolling it up into a slim, space-saving profile when not in use. This makes the roll-up an ideal choice for small living spaces, guest rooms, or anywhere you need a flexible sleeping surface that can be neatly tucked away.

How do I choose the ideal futon bed?
Picking the correct size solely depends on your needs. If you are an average-sized adult who needs something for a compact area and comfort, then the compact double or standard double futon sizes are the ideal choice. However, if you prefer to spread your arms around when sleeping, then a king double futon may be the perfect fit. Whatever your preference, there is a wide selection of futon sofa beds to choose from, all combining convenience and comfort for your sleeping needs.
